Bone homeostasis relies on tightly coordinated remodeling regulated by osteocytes through the lacunar-canalicular network. In breast cancer bone metastasis the remodeling balance is disturbed, profoundly affecting bone structure and integrity. The spaciotemporal processes behind remain to be fully understood. We use synchrotron CT imaging to investigate the mineralized micro- and nanoenvironment in early breast cancer bone metastasis. This project explores the question how early changes in bone remodeling and architecture are associated with alterations in the osteocyte lacunar-canalicular network during breast cancer bone metastasis? And can these multiscale changes identify the earliest hallmarks of metastatic bone disease?
Hoaxes, fake news, disinformation… in recent years, we have had to get used to living in an environment where facts and opinions are confused, and where it seems we have given up on understanding reality. Clearly, this context is unfavorable to science, as it undermines its values and foundations. Tackling this may seem like an overwhelming task, yet there are grounds for hope and actions we can take to defend the noble values of our profession.
