Dra. Naiara Beraza (CICBiogune)
Dra. Naiara Beraza performed her doctoral thesis in the Dept. of internal medicine in the University of Navarra where she investigated the role of Cardiotrophin-1, a cytokine belonging to the IL6- family, during liver injury. Next, she moved to Germany to investigate the role of the IKK complex during the progression of NASH in Prof. C. Trautwein’s lab. Her postdoctoral work uncovered the essential role of IKKg/NEMO in protecting the liver against tumorigenesis. Moreover, her work highlighted the implication of the TRAIL/NK-cell axis as a major contributor to the progression of NASH. Also, her work underlined that NEMO is essential for the regeneration of the liver and the protection against acute liver injury. Afterwards, Dr. Beraza moved to CICbioGUNE to develop her Ramon y Cajal contract. There, she has focused in further elucidating the implication of NK cells during acute liver injury, fibrogenesis and NASH progression in the context of GNMT deficiency; a pathological situation observed in cirrhotic and HCC patients. Currently, her work is focalized on Sirtuin-1 and its involvement during liver regeneration and fibrogenesis.
