Biodonostia HRI has set up two new Research groups: Health Services for Ageing and Chronic Illness and Sensory Neurodegeneration.
Health Services in Ageing and Chronic Illness Research Group is led by Dr. Javier Mar Medina and belongs to the Surgery and other Systemic Diseases Area. It aims to promote complete health research that can look in greater depth at knowledge of mechanisms influencing the origin of health conditions and chronic limitations to activity with the aim of establishing more effective intervention strategies. The group wishes to promote innovation in integrated services and organisational models to guarantee equity, efficiency and sustainability in care for chronic patients. On the other hand, it aims to promote clinical research in Primary Care in order to incorporate interventions that focus on chronic diseases based on the evidence.
The second Research Group, Sensory Neurodegeneration, is led by Dr. Javier Ruiz Ederra and belongs to the Neurosciences area. Its study target is diseases that affect the sense of sight, where Retinitis Pigmentosa is the main line of research. Retinitis Pigmentosa is the most common form of hereditary degeneration of the retina, with a worldwide prevalence of approximately 1 in 4,000 individuals. It is characterised by progressive dysfunction associated with loss of batons and/or cones that leads to atrophy of the retina and loss of sight. Another area of study is cataracts, representing the main cause of loss of vision worldwide in people aged over 55.
These two new additions bring the number of Research Groups to 25 at IIS Biodonostia, divided into 7 topic areas.
